Healthy Snacks for Truck Drivers

Trucking is a tough job that requires hours and hours of time on that long, open road. Sometimes when you’re driving, you just want to reach for a snack to satisfy you until your next stop. But that’s where the trouble comes in. Some of the easiest to eat and most convenient snacks come in the form of calorie-laden chips, crisps, and cookies. And while those brightly packaged treats are tempting, if you’re trying to stay healthy on the road, you’ll want to limit the amount of high-fat, high-calories snacks you select. So, what should you reach for instead? Healthy Trucking of America is happy to offer a great list of some delicious snacks that will make you forget your desire for Doritos.

1. Fruit

Fruit is a no-brainer for a healthy and tasty snack. Many people gravitate toward classic choices like apples and bananas, but there’s a world of healthy possibilities out there when it comes to fruit. Some pop-able fruits that taste great are blueberries, strawberries, grapes, and raspberries. The act of eating one tiny fruit after another mimics the repetitive motion of eating chip after chip, so you’ll actually feel that same satisfaction, all while eating fewer calories and getting far more nutrients! As a bonus, many fruits provide fiber and natural immunity boosts in the form of critical vitamins.

2. Popcorn

Whether bagged or microwaved, popcorn is a delicious and healthy snack that fills you up. You can eat a lot of popcorn while keeping the calories low. Opt for 100 calories bags or lower butter and sodium varieties so you can keep on track with your nutritional goals.

3. Hard-boiled eggs

Eggs are packed with protein, and protein makes you feel fuller longer. Boiled eggs are simple to make and store and can be eaten plain or with a little hot sauce for some extra heat. Many truck stops even have these handy little snacks available in the refrigerated sections!

4. Raw vegetables

Pre-chopped or easy-to-eat veggies are a delicious snack that work well for truckers because they are mess free with a satisfying crunch and loads of flavor! Some great options are cherry tomatoes, baby carrots, and celery sticks. You can pair them with a dip like guacamole or hummus or eat them as is for a convenient snack that will pack a nutritious punch.

5. Jerky

Jerky is not only delicious, it’s also loaded with protein! There are tons of flavors and varieties to choose from. Some healthy options are turkey jerky, fish jerky, and low-sodium beef jerky. Remember that not all jerky is healthy for you—you’re going to need to carefully examine the nutritional content on the back of the package before you buy to ensure you’re getting good quality jerky.

Snacking healthfully doesn’t have to be hard. With a little planning, you can reach for scrumptious snacks, all while doing wonderful things for your health! Remember, eating well is equivalent to maintaining a well-kept truck. You wouldn’t fill your truck with subpar oil because it wouldn’t function as well, so don’t fill your stomach with substandard food. After all, truckers know the importance of quality fuel, so maintain your body with the same care you would your truck.
